Kids STARRs Program

Our STARR martial arts program is based on the concepts of teaching children self-defense along with physical fitness in a fun game like environment.  The idea came to me many years ago in the 1990’s where I saw too many martial arts classes for young children continue to be taught as it had been for so long with fighting and aggressiveness.  Some children enjoyed the activity however many did not and soon quit, missing out on some significant and meaningful life lessons.

I believed that children could get major benefits from the fun discipline, fitness training, self-defense concepts (keeping themselves safe from peers) and learn the language and movements (knowing their right from their left) from repetition and fun skills.  Children, I believe,  would grasp the knowledge and be able to see the progression (belt rewards) by focusing on a set pattern to class that they would learn and become accustomed to and be comfortable with.  One significant way to do this is to have the instructors have just as much fun (but focused and controlled) as the children.

This concept has been a huge success and we have seen our earliest children stay with the art longer and many have reached a high level of Black Belt excellence.   The benefits we have seen in many of our students has been that they are happy, energetic, have better muscle control, focus and concentration, help them socialize better, follow directions, listen to authority,

Our students are called STARRs.  STARR  means a (S) Safe & Self-Confident, (T) Trustworthy, (A) Achiever, who is (R) Respectful and (R) Responsible.

The Goals of the Program are to teach children the skills and provide the guidance necessary to instill positive character and develop great self-esteem.  By participating in the class children learn how to

  1. Develop character, socialization and interpersonal skills, by achieving common goals

  2. Build increased self-esteem that sets the foundation for life-long confidence

  3. Improve the level of respect for themselves and others, through humility and sharing

  4. Develop self-discipline and increase their attention span, improving school performance

  5. Focus their energy levels positively, through safe, friendly, and fun curriculum

  6. Improve their overall health, coordination, and balance through structured exercises

  7. Set goals, overcome obstacles, achieve objectives, and succeed
